Bathroom remodeling is one of the best investments you can make in your home. With bathroom remodels, along with kitchen upgrades, you’ll get the largest return for your investment, according to real estate experts. People view bathrooms differently than they used to. Many of today’s bathrooms are elegant, beautiful rooms that are also extremely functional and relaxing. Many are more like a home spa than they are like just a little room needed only for the most basic physical necessities. One of the focal points of any bathroom remodeling project is bathroom sinks and vanities.
To reduce the number of unwanted pests in your home, cut back shrubbery and plants that are close to the windows. These plants are great homes to insects and spiders. If they rub up against your house and windows, they can easily crawl inside to find a warm dry place. Cut back these bushes to … Read More
If you’ve read any of my Squidoo pages before you may remember I live in a very small cottage in Hawaii. How small? Well, 640 sq ft to be exact. So I’m always looking for ideas to help me save precious inches.
Most homeowners spend the bulk of their time in their living rooms, relaxing during the evening hours and over the weekends. Those who like area rugs tend to install hardwood or laminate wood floors. Wood provides the room with a warm feeling. The most popular wood varieties for hardwood flooring include oak, black walnut, and maple. For some reason I seem to be unable to take final photos of things during this project, so you’ll have to trust me when I say that this toilet had a tank lid and a toilet seat. We’re not animals, sheesh.

In tough economic times, few of us are in the mood to go buy a new home and probably can’t sell the one we have anyway. So, more and more of us are looking for that fresh, new way to bring life to our existing home while adding lasting value that will reap a return on our investment dollar.
I find a $350 basic tub works just as well as at $3,000 tub. Avoid jetted tubs. They are expensive. They require additional electrical and permits, and to be honest, no one uses them. They just end up growing mildew in the pipes. Even many builders are now cutting them out. Replacing a bathtub with a spacious shower. A one-piece shower pan is a simple, leak-proof solution to the mistake-prone chore of traditional shower pan construction. Your idea is fantastic and you have great friends who pitched in. You must be … Read More

The shower panel shown here was purchased as a Christmas gift by someone with no knowledge of installation, and was not a retrofit panel. Nevertheless it was decided to modify the connections somewhat and see if it couldn’t be used rather than returning it and choosing something in a retrofit style. It came with hot and cold water hoses that were supposed to replace the existing valve, but it would have meant tearing out … Read More
The best part of this bathroom is the Pottery Barn vanity, which fit perfectly in this space. It came with the marble top and the sinks. The tilt mirrors also came from Pottery Barn. The sconces are from Restoration Hardware.
This is great! I just did a remodeling project and I learned something very interesting. I found this place called the restore, I guess it is sort of like a Good Will for home stuff. While there I found a toilet that was just as beautiful as a new one for $85 less, a sink basin that is beautiful for $78 less and other supplies as well. I purchased the items myself, then had the contractor install them all. In the end I saved about $300 that way. Everyone should try to see if they have a store like that. I think it might be ran by habitat for humanity.… Read More

The goal here is to save money. Window treatments can be very costly. Depending on the size of your window, your only choice may be to go with curtains when trying to stay under $100. It is a little different with a concrete overlay. You first of all with get a more consistent color and this color will be more vivid and in most cases more dramatic. This is because the mix is consistent and we are using white Portland cement in the mix as opposed to … Read More
Do have an older bathroom with tiled walls? If so, chances are that some of the tiles are cracked or chipped, and the tile grouting might be stained or beginning to come loose. Maybe you’re just tired of the old tile and want a newer, more modern bath. Replacing tile is messy, time consuming, inconvenient, and expensive. The old tile has to be torn out, the backer board has to be replaced, and the new tile and grout have to be installed. Much easier options lie in tub surrounds.
But it’s really hard to use the bathroom – for me – because there are no mirrors. I am making progress though. Because there are only 20 1/2 inches between the two sconces, traditional mirrors aren’t working for the space. They’re either way too wide, or the ones narrow enough are too short and would look truly goofy in the space. … Read More
In this poor housing market, Quonset huts are popular with new homeowners as well as with retirees looking for an affordable way to move to a warmer climate. A quonset hut is a type of arch-style, semicylindrical steel building that was used in World War II for equipment storage. Since then, Quonset huts have been used for inexpensive equipment storage in commercial and agricultural settings. In today’s housing market, Quonset-hut homes are a popular option, mainly because they’re less expensive to build or buy than other types of homes and can be built in less time.
Yes. Many home owners do not understand that if you ever have damage to your home, and the cause started in the basement, it may not be covered by insurance if you did not have a permit on the basement finish. It also insures that the contractor has built your basement to the minimum … Read More
I also like to think of myself as a professional amateur interior designer and furniture expert. I’m quite handy around the house, as it turns out.
Am I correct in my thinking that a wet room has at least a shower head, no defined shower walls, and a sunken drain? It would perhaps be cheaper to make a bathroom like this than the traditional way. Every finish we chose was just perfect for us and this house. And knowing that we didn’t break the bank on this project makes it even more satisfying. I had easy access to running all my electric for my ceiling lighting. I mounted all my recessed lights up in the rafters and all on dimmer switches. This is a awesome look when all completed and you dim those lights with that black ceiling above. This is exactly what I was up against in the rancher I live in. I needed more living space but didn’t want to move to a larger home.
We had lots of old doors with this house so we used them. This one I painted with chalk paint so I would have a chalk board and hung it on our laundry room. Chalk paint is handy to use around the house. I have a hub about chalk paint. If you feel like it check it out. … Read More
