Contractors normally use Sharpies or Marks-a-Lot permanent ink markers – These are an ABSOLUTE NO-NO!!!
I had glass tiles on a sheet I purchased from a hardware store and painted them with regular house paint because I wanted them to be a different color. Some times certain materials cannot be painted over. It’s also wise to leave all the taps dripping if a hard freeze is expected. This won’t positively guarantee that the pipes won’t freeze, but it will greatly lessen the chance. Moving water takes much colder temperatures to freeze than does standing water.
