Although conversion vans are relatively rare in the campgrounds we’ve visited, and they probably hadn’t entered my mind much outside of a childhood love for Scooby Doo’s Mystery Machine, back in the vanning heyday of the 1970s, the more research we did, the more it made sense of us to increase our options without increasing our size or budget too much.
To begin, rip the top and side jambs to the thickness of the wall framing plus the exterior wall sheathing. The cement board will lap over the jambs. The windowsill should also be flush with the interior framing, but hang over the outside sheathing about 1-1/2 in. and have a 5-degree slope toward the outside to help shed water. To keep water from running behind the siding as it drips off the edge, cut a shallow groove (or saw kerf) in the bottom lip (Fig. A). Also, remember to flash behind the trim to keep the window watertight. Trim the window exterior to match the house, using caulk to seal between the trim and siding.
I get the impression from reading other articles that building requirements for sheds are a lot stricter in America than they are in England. Generally, in Britain sheds, greenhouses and summer houses, and often conservatories attached to the house are considered in ‘Planning Terms’ as temporary structures and therefore don’t need any planning consent; provided these temporary structures take up less than half the garden space. I’d be interested to learn more about what’s required in America.
Once you have the layout down pat and you know the stuff that will fit into your new bathroom, you can then begin to focus on the other ingredients that will make it say, LOOK! Tiles make a bathroom stand out and get noticed while making the walls and floors easy to clean and maintain. Choosing the right tile can be an overwhelming task; but, knowing the color scheme you have in mind for the walls and ceilings, will make selecting the tiles an easier task. Tile colours can be matched to the paint colours or they can be made to contrast, as in using black tiles against a white painted room. The size of the bathroom will usually determine the size of the tiles you will most likely use.
