Ultimately, renovation is about discovering what your house can be, and letting us put in the work to make it happen.

A recent kitchen renovation project inspires new woodshop storage ideas for my garage: recycle the old kitchen cabinets into new storage space. I also like the idea of reusing as much salvaged material as possible to reduce landfill many remodeling jobs, the old kitchen cabinets do not retain any cash value and to the contractor, they are not worth the time and effort to save. All too often, the contractor rips out the old kitchen cabinets to make room for the new cabinets. Rather than removing the cabinets carefully for resale or donation, the old cabinets are broken down and tossed aside. Deemed worthless, the old cabinets are doomed to the dumpster and destined for the landfill.

Do put furring on your walls: the floor isn’t the only place where moisture can seep into the basement. Apart from ensuring that there won’t be any water issues with your floor, install furring strips on the wall. This should give you about a half inch space between the moisture on the outside of the wall and the interior wall. New homes and additions are easier to measure when open and unfinished. The difficult measurements come from old homes. Filling in dead space around a foundation may require an estimate. It is better to estimate on the low side to save cost. If you complete a project and find you need a small amount more, a small kit can be purchased to finish the job. Expanding foam insulation sticks to itself from old to new project very well and will seal completely as if it were done as one job.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the term DIY, it is actually an acronym for Do It Yourself…and this tiny acronym has taken the country by storm!
Paying someone else to design and do the work was beyond the budget we set for ourselves. I found many different kits online that were more affordable. As we evaluated them however, we saw numerous things that made us fearful we could botch the job up nicely, although anyone who has done a bit of DIY work competently in the past could probably handle it. I’ll include some of the things I found below.
